Now, with COVID restrictions abating, here comes the spring itch to buy, to sell, to move out and perhaps up, or at least to spend an entertaining weekend of cruising from open house to open house fantasizing about your new lives within new walls. Danish docmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont returns to Eastern Ukraine with this delicately wrenching diary of life in a halfway house for neglected children. The camera just lingers on Eva, Sasha and Kolya, and they exist, projecting the weight of the world for much of the time and then bursts of jubilation that pretty much tore me to pieces.

Sasha, whose adoption sadly fell through, resides in a temporary European orphanage. Alina’s connection to the outside world remains sporadic due to the war, but she’s still with her adoptive family. Prior to its official release, Wilmont screened the film for the children, psychologists, city administration, and caregivers.

Easterners built the foundations of our architectural buffet when they brought their tastes in dwellings with them, whether the style suited the landscape and climate or not. The Greek Revivals and Georgian Colonials of Lexington and Concord were re-created on the streets of L.A., where they stood defiantly apart, wood amidst adobe, Anglo among Californio. Was L.A., the Tongva built “kiys,” willow-and-reed domed huts that were built to last only a season or so.
The most sublime and costly of these is the gem-perfect Gamble House in Pasadena, but thousands of California bungalows fill neighborhoods and towns like South Pasadena. At their best, the bungalows appear to arise from the landscape, in hunkered-down lines with deep, cool porches and stone and wood materials whose own superb construction is ornament enough. There are times when Wilmont could have turned away a few seconds earlier, but that's likely just the protective parent in me who wanted to turn off the camera and give these young adults their space.

It's moving when a girl is heartbroken over not being able to reach her alcoholic mother, but there's something even more powerful about the following scene, in which she plays with bubbles in a hall with her friend. Seeing that emerge even during consistent grief is where "Splinters" gets its most strength. And it's most tragic how play has become an even rarer commodity in the country of Ukraine since the film was shot. "A House Made of Splinters" unfolds at Lysychansk, a facility in Ukraine where parents can drop off children for up to nine months, at which point they're put into the foster system.
Roofs may incorporate concave eaves and boxed-in porches and windows, sometimes extending for multiple stories. We know the children can stay for nine months, after which if they haven’t found a foster family or been able to go home, they must move to the dreaded state orphanage. (Whether they are right to dread it, we don’t discover.) But the names and status of the participants have to be gleaned gradually. The ages of the four children the film focuses on remain a mystery – roughly nine to 11 at a guess, although they could be even younger. The staff are not introduced at all, so it is odd that one of them provides a voiceover that tends towards the lyrical (in Lysychansk, “every 10th door hides a broken family”) and jars slightly with the film’s naturalistic, open-ended style.

Lereng Wilmont’s filmmaking doesn’t get too caught up in rhetorical hand-wringing, however. This is a predominantly observational affair, marked by unusual tenderness and human interest, shot with a camera that feels all but invisible to its subjects — belying the director’s delicate, precise approach to light and framing. Some of the most memorable, moving scenes here capture children in everyday states of play and rest, frequently teasing and fighting, but also showing each other the casual affection that they couldn’t take for granted at home. Wilmont served as his own cinematographer on A House Made of Splinters and one can only assume that his ability to work with a skeleton crew contributed to the film’s intimacy.
With A House Made of Splinters, Wilmont delivers a quietly affecting depiction of a children’s shelter near the frontlines in Eastern Ukraine, where dedicated social workers care for displaced children caught amidst the chaos of war. Through his lens, Wilmont crafts a timely portrait of individuals creating a sanctuary from the splinters of their disrupted lives. Though its skyline will never measure up to the likes of New York or Chicago, Los Angeles has carved out its own architectural identity.
